Welcome to Untold Solh, a platform where people from all walks of life can share their stories. In this edition, we hear from an anonymous bisexual individual who shares their journey and challenges. We hope that by sharing this story, we can inspire empathy, understanding, and acceptance for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
“As society evolves and progresses, so do our attitudes toward sexuality, and gender identity. However, the internal journey of accepting one’s own sexuality, is a whole other ballpark of difficulty. How does one go about embracing their differences in a society that expects them to conform?
I had always known something was “off” with me. Be it my overly confused and defensive reaction to Dostana, my proclivity to queer fanfiction, or my downright crush on Vanessa from Phineas and Ferb - there was something that always made me feel like I just didn't fit.
I am a 20-year-old student from NIFT. Growing up, being in a relationship with a man was something I was always taught to strive for. Whether it was the social pressure to have a crush on a boy in the class, or that one relative in a close family wedding, saying, "The next one in line is you". From a young age, we are taught that as women, our value comes from being in romantic relationships with men. But what these societal pressures don't account for is not wanting to date men at all.
My bisexual coming-out was both a pleasant surprise and a desolate reality check. My father refuses to consider it the truth. My mother believes I’m straight, with a slight ‘defect’. My older sister prays to the gods that I get married to a man only. My light, in this momentary passage of darkness, turned out to be my closest friends and peers. If it wasn’t for their vocal love, constant support, and zealous protectiveness, my coming-out experience would’ve left me more wounded than healed.
Although I find myself estranged from the norms of society, there is a group where I do belong. The LGBTQ+ community is like a curtain of safety, solidarity, acceptance, and comfort. It’s knowing that whatever you are going through, you are not alone in this journey. I think the biggest contribution mature queers from the community can make for us younger ones, is just being themselves and expressing their individuality through their fashion, words, and art. Authentic queer expression gives the world a glimpse into their wonderful and vibrant solidarity, and the young ones an insight into themselves. After all, understanding is the first step to acceptance, and our journeys toward embracing our sexualities will only become easier and happier with time.”
